El Misti, Peru
Reporter: Hello. My name is Kelly and I am talking to Robert one of the survivors from El Misti Peru - a volcano that last erupted in 1870. How do you feel being one of the survivors of that terrible volcano?
Robert: Good and glad that I didn’t die.
Reporter: Did you know anybody who died?
Robert: No. I was just there on a business trip for two weeks.
Reporter: Where were you when the volcano erupted?
Robert: I was scaling it when I heard rumbling and it started to shake. I was about 18,000 feet up on the mountain and I fell to the ground and started running to a nearby building.
Reporter: Did you ever imagine that the volcano would erupt when you were there?
Robert: No because it has not erupted in a long time but I thought that it might erupt soon but not when I was on it.
Reporter: Where is El Misti located?
Robert: It is located Southeast of Nevada de Chachani and across the Chili River Valley.
Reporter: How many major eruptions were there in the 20th century?
Robert: There were no major eruptions since then but there has been 5 minor eruptions.
Reporter: Wow. What is the edifice height of El Misti?
Robert: The edifice height is about 2200 meters.
Reporter: That is a lot. You sure know a lot about this volcano. But then again you are a scientist. How many feet or meters is El Misti from sea level?
Robert: El Misti is 19 098 feet (5825 meters) above the sea level.
Reporter: Is it true that El Misti is a symmetrical stratovolcano?
Robert: Yes, that is true. It is a symmetrical stratovolcano with nested submit craters that tower above the city of Arequipa.
Reporter: Well, thank you for coming in here today and talking to us about your interesting facts. I know it must be hard to talk about that stuff saying that you could have died if you did not get off the mountain as soon as you did. So once again thanks for coming and good luck in the future when you go and study volcanoes.
