The process

(otherwise known as "How did we get this project done?")

CMP 521 classes learned to use these programs over past few months as part of the 521 course which is mandatory for all grade 10 students at KISH. We have often discussed the value of online tutorials & frequently use them as resources to support our learning.

As part of the course and to reinforce the programs they learned, I challenged them to create a tutorial using HTML or Corel Presentations. They were asked to select one of the listed programs that they felt they knew quite well and then explain it in a manner that could be understood by a novice user. For each of the programs that would have a tutorial, as a class we brain stormed a list of features/techniques of each program that could be included in the tutorial. They were encouraged to break the lesson into many small steps. (We agreed that a fast learner could quickly go through small steps but if a person was trying to understand a more complex task it would be pretty tough to decipher what was included in that big task.) As a class we took advantage of this excellent application of file management so we reviewed file management techniques as students often ran out of space on their account using so many graphics. Students of course had to ensure all html and graphic files were in the same folder so that the web pages worked properly.

Some of the things the students also had to consider as they developed their tutorials:

Who is the audience?
  • how old?
  • what do they know already?
  • what is their reading level?
What are others saying?
  • get feedback from peers initially to revise
  • get feedback from a broader audience
  • revise as you believe is best
How to make it simple yet interesting?
  • Use your own preferences and style (Eg. "The Rocky Road to Databases"
