"What a school thinks about its Library is a measure of what it feels about education"

School Library Mission Statement

Our school library will provide a collaborative learning environment allowing learners, of various learning styles, interests and abilities, opportunities to actively engage in and interact with a variety of resources (print, digital and human) representing various views and beliefs.

The learner’s informational literacy needs will be met through a variety of activities and experiences in selecting, retrieving, analyzing, evaluating, synthesizing, creating and communicating information while demonstrating their understanding and new knowledge.

Through an inquiry based library program, where the classroom teacher and teacher librarian work together collaboratively, learners will be able to observe, reason, question, think critically, solve problems and justify opinions while developing their skills and attitudes in becoming independent and responsible learners, and in becoming individually and socially aware as they make sense of the world around them.

To meet their reading literacy needs, learners will be exposed to a range of reading initiatives which will encourage and promote reading for enjoyment, as well as for learning.

The library at L. M. Montgomery is the heart of the school. Encouraging life-long learning through the use and study of literature, the library has become a model of the ideal library program for Prince Edward Island Elementary schools. The library, as a result, is a place of exploration and enjoyment where students are encouraged to work independently and are challenged to work at or above their potential.

The children attending L. M. are fortunate students indeed, as every class draws on the substantial resources and capabilities of the library, which includes two small hubs of computers, and its personnel, a dedicated, full-time teacher librarian and the many student volunteers (library monitors) who keep it running smoothly.

Individual classes from grades 1-3 have regular book exchanges once a cycle but students are encouraged to exchange their books more often, if they prefer, during the scheduled open book exchanges.

Grades 4-6 use the library more independently and can exchange their books, if they need to, on a daily basis, during the scheduled daily open book exchanges.

All grades work on library projects throughout the school year.
