Our Grade 1/2 class enjoyed a "Celebrating Our Differences" theme. Through various forms of literature, class discussions and classroom activities, we explored our similarities and differences, family traditions and cultural heritages. It was a fun and interesting theme which gave us an opportunity to focus on the importance of understanding individual challenges, respecting one another and getting along. To learn more about diversity, our grade 1/2 class began with an exploration of themselves. They drew pictures about themselves, which were then scanned. Next they brainstormed what makes them unique using Inspiration software.

They then read a variety of books on people from diverse backgrounds, which they illustrated with their buddies. In December, they had a special celebration of diversity, with a digital camera used to record the event. Finally, they drew graphics on the computer to share what diversity means to them. Here are some samples.
