THE CIRCUS To finish the grade 2 teacher's theme, we had our own circus in our gym! Using the parachute and some heavy duty rope, we created a 'Big Top' tent. RECIPE FOR BIG TOP TENT: through rope over rafter in gym, then attach it to a hoola hoop inside center hole of parachute. Tie the handles of the parachute to the side basketball rims of the gym. We set up our music room risers under the big top for seating, watched a quick video about lions and tigers (difficult to have the real thing!) with popcorn to boot! Following our show under the Big Top, we had stations set up around the outside of the tent, which our grade 6 leadership students were responsible for. We played a circus music C.D. as the students went around the stations. STATION #1 - STILT WALKING stilts - ice cream container with holes punched through the bottom for rope. Rope should be long enough for kids to use as handles. This worked well, however a stronger plastic container, or a metal can (apple juice tin?) would be best. Set up an obstacle course for students to walk through. STATION # 2 - JUGGLING Students were given an opportunity to learn to juggle from a very talented grade nine student. Set out a variety of equipment to try, such as: scarves, tennis balls, bean bags, foam balls, playground balls, etc. STATION # 3 - FACE PAINTING Using washable face paint, our leadership students had a lot of fun with this one! STATION # 4 - TRAPEZE Using the bars in our gym, we used our movable chin-up bar to attach the rope. Students could then climb up the bars, grab the rope, and swing onto the crash mat. STATION # 5 - TUMBLING We set up a strip of mats and one of our talented gymnasts in the older grades demonstrated some tumbling skills. Students were then given a chance to try! STATION # 6 - CARNIVAL GAMES We had a ring toss, a dart board, a few guessing games (how many candies in the jar), but one of the most popular games involved one of our students with special needs. The teacher's assistant would record a command on the recorder. (i.e. " Throw the bean bag into the red bowl.") Our student would then push the button that would play the message. The students at the station would then need to follow the command. After participating in the circus stations, all the students went back under the big top. As we finished our popcorn, we watched a magic show given by one of our students in grade 4!
