PERSONAL PEDOMETERS

Our students participated in a program initiated by CAHPERD (Canadian Association of Health, Recreation, Physical Education Recreation, and Dance) that was designed to increase the daily activity of students.

We received a class set of pedometers which the students were supposed to wear for one week.  They also had a log book to fill in each day, outlining what activities they participated in and for how long.  The second week the students did not wear the pedometers, but still recorded daily activity in their log books.

As a result of this program our school kept the pedometers.

We now have a school program for grades 3 - 9 that we call

 "STEPPING MORE IN 2004"

Every month each class wears the pedometer for the same length of time - one phys.ed. class, one morning, one full day, etc.

We record the total number of steps for the class, then get a class average that will be used for the contest.  The class with the best average will win a prize (a free phys. ed. class, an afternoon outside, etc.)

We try to incorporate the concepts behind these programs into our other courses.  For example:

Language Arts - writing a story
