An interesting grade six theme is "Space".  To incorporate this theme into the Phys. Ed. class, we focused on

Activities in Small Spaces

We decided astronauts needed to be fit both before and while they are in space.  We did some fitness testing and aerobics for our 'before flight' exercise, then needed something for the astronauts to do while they were in space, in the space shuttle.

Inuit games are a great means to provide activities that can be done in small spaces.  Many of us have teachers on staff who have taught in our Northern Territories - there could be a great resource for you on your own staff!

Inuit games are generally tests of strength and will power.  Activities like the Owl Hop, the Stick Jump, and the Airplane all test the individual's endurance and strength.

The Airplane - lift the athlete up, seeing how long they can hold their body rigid and straight.          airplane2.jpg (40937 bytes)

The Owl Hop - Hook one foot behind the knee and bend half-way down.  Bounce or hop as far as you can without quitting.

Grab the broom handle and try to jump back and forth without resting or pausing.  After each jump, move hands in closer together, making it more difficult.
