1972 Consolidation of Schools to Form Montague Consolidated

Brooklyn

In May there was Arbor Day and the students and teacher would all work together to clean the classroom and school yard. Another very exciting time for students was at Christmas. The concert was quite an event. There were lots of plays, songs and recitations. Everyone in the community would be there! Every student had to have a part in the play which was written out by hand. The older students would write out all the parts. The boys usually got the tree. Usually they would go out in search of the tree and generally would bring back one that would not suit so they would be able to go out again.

Once consolidation had been decided upon, the rural teachers came into Montague for staff meetings. This practice was continued while Montague Consolidated School was being built. Most of the rural teachers did not know each other. The teachers were excited about the thought of new resources, modern equipment, a school library and the fact that they would be together with their colleagues under one roof. They were also eagerly anticipating the thought of teaching only one grade. It was scary at the same time because they were wondering if they were up to par with their colleagues. Teachers drew straws to see who would get which room as at Montague Consolidated each corner was a grade level comprised of three classrooms. Some of the classes moved as whole classes from Montague Elementary. One class was made from the surrounding rural schools as rural classes were generally smaller due to the fewer numbers enrolled at each grade level. At first, the large school was almost overwhelming. Consolidation truly was a time of change for both teachers and students alike.
