Victoria Cross | Valleyfield East | ![]() The rural schools were generally one room school houses with students in grades one to eight. There were no school busses. Each community had a centrally located school so the children would not have far to walk. One teacher was responsible for the instruction of all students in all of the eight grades. There was no running water or flush toilets. Instead there was a can with a tap/spout at the bottom from which to get drinking water and there were chemical toilets in the entry way. At the front of the room would be a chalk board that was always full of work for the students to do while the teacher was busy teaching another group. The only heat source was a pot-belly stove which was lighted each morning by one of the older pupils or a father of one or some of the students. It would take a long time to warm the room so children would be seated in a circle around the stove. |
