Here are some chemistry definitions to help you understand some of the language presented to you throughout my project.
Atom
The smallest particle of an element
Atomic Mass Unit (amu)
One twelvth of a mass of an atom; a unit used for stating atomic and formula weights
Atomic Number
number of protons in the nucleus; defines the identity of element.
Atomic Orbital
Where electrons are stored and are the strongest of any place in the atom.
Atomic Radius
Radius of an atom.
Atomic Weight
Weighted average of the masses of an element; The relative masses of atoms of different elements.
Avogadro's Number
The number (6.022x1023) of atoms, molecules or particles found in 1 mole of something.
Chemical Change
A change in which one or more new substances are formed.
Chemical Equation
Description of a chemical reaction when you place formulas of the reactants on the left and the formulas of products on the right of the arrow.
Electron
A subatomic particle having a mass of 0.00054858 amu and a charge of -1 found in the outer walls of an atom surrounding the nucleus.
Element
A substance that cannot be decomposed into simpler substances by chemical means.
Neutron
A neutral subatomic particle found in the nucleus of atom.
Nucleons
Particles comprising the nucleus; protons and neutrons.
Nucleus
The very small, very dense, positively charged center of an atom containing protons and neutrons, as well as other subatomic particles.
Pairing
A favourable interaction of two electrons with opposite m , values in the same orbital.
Periodic Table
An arrangement of elements in order of increasing atomic numbers that also emphasizes periodicity.
Proton
A subatomic particle with and a charge of +1, found in the nucleus of atoms.
Coefficient
A small whole number that appears in front of a formula in an equation. This is used to balance equations.
