MISSION STATEMENT

We believe school should be a preparation for life and that all students can learn. Each student is an individual with unique personality and potential . To enable students to reach this potential the staff, students, parents, and community must work together to create an environment which is safe, both physically and psychologically. All members of the school community shall be treated with respect and dignity.

GENERAL INFORMATION

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES IN THE EVENT OF A BUS ACCIDENT

Student Evacuation Procedures

1. Keep your cool and listen for instructions from the bus driver and student leaders.

2. Leave books and personal belongings behind.

3. Fasten loose clothing so that it will not catch on seats or doorways.

4. Exit from front or rear doors as instructed.

5. Move quickly and quietly.

6. Do not shove. Wait your turn to exit.

7. Accept help from helpers to exit rear exits.

8. Follow your leader well away from bus.

9. Stay together and do not return to bus until instructed to do so by the driver.

10. Always stay alert and listen carefully to all instructions given.

Driver Evacuation Procedures

1. Supervise and organize student evacuation outlined above.

2. Ensure students are grouped at a safe distance away from bus.

3. If anyone is hurt, appoint two students to go to the nearest house to call the ambulance, police, and school.

4. Ensure weather conditions are safe enough before sending students for help.

5. Maintain order at all times.

Rear Exit

1. Leader takes a position outside the bus and quickly leads students a safe distance away from the bus off to the side of the road.

2. Helpers position themselves outside the exit, facing one another and provide assistance to students getting off.

3. Bus driver begins at back of bus, alternately evacuating one seat at a time until reaching the front.

4. Before leaving by the front exits, driver checks to see no one has been left behind.

Front and Rear Exits Simultaneously

1. Half the bus exits by the front, half by the back.

2. Leaders take positions at both exits and lead students a safe distance away from the danger zone.

3. Helpers take their positions at the back exit.

4. Driver begins evacuating the front half of the bus one seat at a time using the front exit, leaves students to continue on their own, and begins evacuating the back half of the bus one seat at a time using the back exit.

The Eastern Unit Board Office endorses the use of the procedures outlined in this document, and encourages all involved to do the same.

If Driver Is Injured

If the driver is unconscious, or too injured to move, a senior student will have to decide which exit to use, and take charge of the evacuation. Helpers and leaders will carry out functions as assigned by the senior student. The objective is to evacuate all students first, and help the driver afterwards. Two students (weather conditions permitting) should go to nearest house to call the ambulance, police and school. The driver should not be moved from the bus unless it is dangerous to stay on the bus.

If Student Is Injured

The decision to move injured students will have to be weighed against the seriousness of the injuries and the danger of staying on the bus. However, all students able to evacuate the bus will do so according to the above instructions. The driver will appoint helpers to assist with injured students unable to vacate bus only if the driver deems conditions safe enough on board bus.

Drivers Instructions

The driver will be in charge of the accident scene at all times as long as he is not prevented from doing so by virtue of sustained injuries. The driver will provide instructions to the student leaders and/or helpers as to who will go and call for help. This decision will depend upon existing weather conditions and the nearest place of access to a phone. The first call should go to the police, providing as many exact details as possible. If an ambulance is required, please request police to call for it. The next call should go to the School Board Office. The driver will also ensure all reasonable assistance is provided to parties of any other vehicles involved in the accident. In the event that the driver cannot perform the above duties, then the student leaders will take over the above requirements.

Telephone Procedures

In the event of a school bus accident the following procedures will be used.

1. The person answering the telephone at the school is to obtain as much information as possible concerning the accident, such as the location, bus number, driver, and injuries and then call 911 for emergency services.

2. The school Principal is to be notified immediately.

3. The Board Office is to be notified if the accident occurs during school hours:

Board Office 368-6990

4. If the disaster occurs after Board Office hours, then the following people should be contacted, and details should be given to them.

Walter MacEwen    Vice-Principal 629-1890

Larry McGuire 961-2223

John Cameron 961-2718

Phyllis Coffin 961-2112

5. The principal, once notified, will inform the vice-principal or other designate teacher. One of these people will go

to the hospital receiving the injured with a list of students scheduled to be on that bus.

6. School Board staff will ensure that their representatives are sent to the scene and to the hospital. Under no circumstances will details be released to the press or to the general public unless authorized by either the Superintendent or the Board Chairman.

7. If the accident occurs prior to close of school for the day, then the secretary should stay at the school until the situation has been controlled and that she has been advised of such by the superintendent or his designate.

8. A list of students who regularly travel on a bus is to be located over the front window. The same applies to students on extracurricular trips.
