Connect A Heart

These are Co-operative games that stress cooperation, fair play and physical activity

Co-operative Relay Race

Equipment:
4 pylons
You will need 4 or 5 colorful hearts. The number of hearts depends on the number of relay teams. Cut the heart in at least 15 pieces.

Space Required:
Gymnasium

Description of Activity:
Divide the class into 4 or 5 relay teams as evenly as possible. Arrange the teams in single file each behind a pylon at one end of the gym. Place the hearts in a pile. Each pile is located in front of a team at the other end of the gym. On the signal, the first student in the line performs a designated locomotor action while approaching the heart pieces, collects a heart piece and returns to the starting line, and tags the right hand with the next team member. This procedure continues until all of the puzzle pieces have been collected. As the race is in progress, team members work together to put the puzzle pieces together. The first team that finishes the puzzle correctly is the winner. Teams can exchange pieces and race again.

Make sure each team prior to the relay beginning knows which puzzle pieces are theirs when the race begins.

This is a good relay because even a team that is lagging behind in the race can win if they put the puzzle together quickly. Stress co-operation and fair play.

Handshake Tag

Purpose:
The purpose of this game is to make children feel at ease with one another and to introduce themselves to one another. Great fast paced game to be played at the beginning of the year!

Description:
*Choose one player to be “IT”. All other players scatter throughout the play area. Insist that IT should tag lightly on the shoulder. On “Go”, IT, try to tag another player. Players, if tagged, must stand very still until another comes by and shakes their hand to free them along with saying “Pleased to meet you. My name is _____.” Every three minutes change “IT”.

Variation: Have 2 - 3 “ITS”
