Novel Study Activities for Cowboys Don’t Cry Read the options and do five of the eight. Submit all five in a folder, and return the book, by February 5th. 1. Discuss Shane’s friendship with Casey. Why do you think their friendship was special? Write a poem about friendship. 2. When Shane went to tryouts he wasn’t dressed properly. Why did he go to tryouts if he wasn’t dressed properly? Does this remind you of something you have done? Do you think it was a good idea? How important are clothes for sports? Choose a sport and tell about the proper clothes. 3. With string and glue, make a design. Refer to the front cover of the novel. Be original and design one of your own for the story. 4. In the beginning of the novel, Halverson uses a flashback as a writing technique to capture the reader’s attention. What is a flashback? Discuss the effectiveness of the one Halverson uses. 5. In essay form, write a response. Shane was faced with a problem in the novel, Cowboys Don’t Cry. What is the problem? How did Shane handle it? Was he able to solve it? How would you handle the problem differently? 6. What are the penalties on PEI for drunk driving? Make a poster (on regular-sized paper) about the dangers and penalties of drunk driving. 7. Read the poem, “The Grasshopper”. What does the poem tell us about solving problems? Rewrite the poem and illustrate it. 8. Look through magazines and newspapers to find pictures of people who remind you of characters in the story. Display these pictures in an interesting way, and submit a piece of paper which explains why each picture reminds you of a certain character.
