PROGRAMS:
Library
Every school needs good library resources to reinforce
reading skills taught in the classroom, to provide opportunities for reading
enjoyment and to make available research materials for special interests and
projects.
Each year we add new titles to our library in an effort to
provide a wider range of reading materials and to update our current material.
Our focus in adding to our library is in the areas of 1)
Canadian Author 2) Island History 3) biographies
and 4) science.
Reading is basic to the success of the child in school and
in later years. Reading at home for enjoyment is important. Try to
ensure that your child is reading material suitable for his/her interests and
abilities.
Even though our library boasts over 3300 titles, our
school staff strongly recommends that all children visit the O'Leary Branch of
the P.E.I. Libraries on a regular basis for additional reading material.
Our library is now automated using the Microcat system.
This program allows for storage and circulation of all library titles. Books are checked out and returned to the library by means of a computer.
In conjunction with the library, we have a computer lab
consisting of 23 computers complete with hard drives and keyboards. These
computers are networked and have Internet access and are connected it a network
printer. All computers have CD capacity. The software includes
Microsoft Bookshelf (includes a dictionary, Columbia Encyclopedia and a
thesaurus), Grolier Encyclopedia (all 21 volumes), Encarta, a world atlas, and
Compton's Type to Learn II and the new Canadian Encyclopedia and several word
processing programs. We also have 386 computers for use in some
classrooms. Recently the school has purchased a scanner to aid both
students and teachers , also a digital camera and colour printer.
