PROGRAMS:
Music
The grade 1 music program involves the children in a variety of musical
experiences including singing games,
rhythmic movement, reading and writing music in the early stages of the Kodaly
program, playing rhythmic
instruments and listening and responding to music. Through these various
activities the grade 1 students develop
musical concepts and skills such as moving to the beat and defining the rhythm
of music. They learn to distinguish
between fast and slow, loud and soft, and high and low in the music. Later on in
the school year they begin to read basic rhythms and easy melodic lines using
sol, mi and lah.
In grades 2 and 6 the music program continues and enlarges on the grade 1
program. The students develop more
complex rhythmic and melodic discrimination skills through the analysis of
songs, listening lessons, folk songs, and singing games. Throughout the entire
program there is an emphasis on singing and participation in large group, small
group and individual activities. Careful attention is paid to students being
able to sing to the best of their ability, and learning how to write music
following the Kodaly approach.
For those students in grades 3 to 6 who desire further pursuits in music we
offer musical activities including school choir, primary choir and recorder
ensembles.
The school year is highlighted by our special concerts and activities which
include the Christmas concert in
December, the "Celebration of the Arts Festival" in April, and the "West Prince
Music Festival" in early May.
Through the many and varied activities in the music program, both in music class
and during extra-curricular
activities, we endeavor to give each child the opportunity to develop and
increase their musical knowledge and
abilities, which will enable them to participate in music and band at the junior
high school level. The program also
attempts to provide the students with an appreciation for all styles of music,
from classical to rock, and a basic
understanding of musical instruments, sound production, and composition. |
