Phys Ed
Physical Education has been an integral and required part of the elementary school curriculum since 1973. Each student has three periods of physical education per six day cycle, with the periods ranging in length from 25 minutes for grades 1 and 2, to 30 minutes for grades 5 and 6. For more information on the general objectives for each level, please click here.

At all levels, personal fitness is considered of major importance. Most students consider physical education their favorite subject. The prime requirement is a pair of sneakers ( a must for all students!). Casual clothing, lots of energy, and some enthusiasm will provide the rest. Please determine from your child the days on which he or she has phys. ed. in order to make sure that the child is dressed appropriately.

The physical education program is supplemented by other special activities presented through the year:

  • Intramurals are held at lunch for grades 4, 5, and 6 students.

  • Student leadership students run the program with the help of the Canadian Intramural Recreation Association manual.

  • Seasonal sports are played and teams are organized among those who wish to participate.

  • A special favorite for all students is our annual winter carnival, held in February of each year.

  • All classes are encouraged to participate in such activities as dress-up day, contests, outdoor activities, and games of broomball and basketball with the teachers.

  • Other annual events are the school track and field and ice sports which provide an opportunity for all students to participate in age class races. School teams in cross country running, soccer, basketball, softball, badminton, wrestling, and track and field are chosen from grades 4, 5 and 6 boys and girls to compete in area tournaments.

School teams are called the "O'Leary Lions"! Having teams in these sports provides another opportunity for student participation, thus contributing to skill development. As well, various after-school clubs give the students another opportunity to pursue their interests and talents.

Success...

...is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.
