AND HISTORY:
The History of Our School
Our school was formed effective July 1, 1971 when, by an order of his Honor, the Lieutenant
Governor-in-council, the school districts of the following twenty-one schools
were amalgamated: Alaska, Brae, Carleton, Coleman, Derby, Dunblane, Glenwood,
Haliburton, Hebron, Howlan, Knutsford, Milburn, Milo, Mount Royal, O'Leary,
Springfield West, Unionvale, West Cape, West Devon, West Point and Woodstock.
On September 3, 1975, all of the elementary schools in this district moved into
the present school. The school was built in 1960 as a high school, and for the
next four years, until 1979, O'Leary Consolidated Elementary School shared this
facility with the O'Leary Regional High School. At that time, there were also
seven mobile classrooms on the grounds, four of which were used by elementary
students. In 1979, the entire facility
became O'Leary Consolidated Elementary School.
O'Leary Regional High School was originally built in 1960. Classes
began on January 3, 1961. The school was expanded in 1962. During
1968, another eight rooms were added; these rooms opened in January 1969.
Our School Crest
The school crest was designed in 1977 through the joint efforts of students and
teachers. The outline design was submitted by Nancy Campbell, a grade five
student.
The centered monogram containing the letters O, C and E in an abstract form, was
designed by Anthony Colbourne, a grade six student. The school name in full was
added to the bottom of the crest to provide quick identification of the school
which it represents.
There are four figures within the outline design. Each is a symbol of an aspect
of elementary education. The symbol of the book and head at the top of the crest
is representative of the academic nature of education - a time for learning. The
symbol to the right of the monogram is a diagrammatic representative of the
school building as seen from above. The monogram, together with the symbol of
the school, may be read as O'Leary Consolidated Elementary School. The symbol of
the rising sun located at the left was submitted by a grade six student, Alex
Rogers. It is symbolic of elementary school being at the beginning of the formal
education process - the beginning of many new, exciting and challenging
experiences for the child. The two figures below the monogram are representative
of the development of the total person in the education process - physical
skills, recreational
activities, musical abilities, and the special opportunity to be a part of
choirs, instrumental groups, clubs and sports teams.
The school wishes to thank all students and staff who contributed to the design
of the school crest. A special thanks to Mrs. Joyce MacKichan (Mrs. MscKinchan
was the Phys Ed teacher at O'Leary from 1974 - 1977) for coordinating
this successful project. We are extremely proud of our school crest! |
