Community History Research Guide

The communities of Prince Edward Island have fascinating stories to tell of life in Canada's smallest province. While all communities have some similarities, there are unique features that set them apart. Researching the history of a community has been a popular past time for many individuals and local historians. The following is a guide to some of the collections and types of records available at the Public Archives and Records Office of Prince Edward Island, and in the community itself, that may assist researchers who wish to document the history of their particular community.

Researchers will want to consult many different primary and secondary sources, a procedure which can be time consuming. An outline of the information to be included in your history, lists of sources to consult, those consulted, and good note keeping are essential. It is very important to document where the information comes from so that future readers or researchers will know where to look for possible further information. Be accurate in your research and in quoting sources. Documenting sources also results in a more professional and scholarly work. Also, be mindful of the fact that not all records have survived the years. Many records may have not been preserved or deposited with an archives or other institution. Also, many events were never recorded.

If the objective is to have a printed booklet or published book, a committee of researchers could be formed to share in the work. One person may want to take on the role of editor to assign tasks, to make final decisions and edit. Many computer programs offer desktop publishing which can produce printer ready text and graphics.
