Badminton

Rules:

Rules of the Canadian Badminton Association shall govern all P.E.I.S.A.A. badminton play-offs. (P.E.I.S.A.A. Classifications apply).

Qualifying Competition:

Individuals must compete in a qualifying meet at the zone level. Two (2) singles players and two (2) doubles teams shall advance from the zone tournament to provincial competition in each classification - Senior, Juvenile, Midget, Bantam, and Novice (male and female).

Provincial Competition:

1. The provincial format to be a two division round robin affair made up of the top two teams from each of the four zones.

2. Students be permitted to participate in both singles and doubles play.

3. No single person may be replaced on a doubles team, the whole team must be replaced.

4. The provincial format to be two-four draw round robin with the top two teams from each division crossing over.

5. Format for round robin play to be as follows:
Pool A Pool B
1st in Zone 1 2nd in Zone 1
1st in Zone 2 2nd in Zone 2
2nd in Zone 3 1st in Zone 3
2nd in Zone 4 1st in Zone 4

6. Round robin play consist of full matches, best 2 of 3 with setting. (Modifications may be used for some levels).

7. Crossover play-off round be regulation matches (best 2 out of 3 games).

8. Tie breaking as per P.E.I.S.A.A. policy.

9. All coaches have a schedule with times prior to the meet.

Awards

Medals shall be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in all divisions. P.E.I.S.A.A. bars shall be awarded in each classification to the winning school, as well as banners for Midget and Senior Champions.

Basketball

Rules:

The official rules of P.E.I.S.A.A. basketball shall be those of F.I.B.A. (P.E.I.S.A.A. classifications apply.)

Exceptions to FIBA Rules

Officials:

For all S.A.A. basketball games officials shall be assigned by the P.E.I.I.A.B.O. Fee structure for officials shall be in accordance with the schedule of fees submitted by the P.E.I.I.A.B.O and ratified by the S.A.A. Executive.

Qualifying and Provincial Competition:

The P.E.I.S.A.A. recommended to the School Boards of PEI that safety mats be placed on the end walls of the gymnasium, during basketball games, to protect competitors during play.

Basketball Site Requirements

Courts - Minimum 1 Regulation Court

Dimensions of Floor - Court size as per Basketball Canada Regulations

Ceiling Height - Minimum 22 feet

Floor - Hardwood or Uniturf

Amount of Seating - Minimum seating required to handle competitors

Curling

1. Rules:

The official rules of PEISAA Curling shall be those of the Canadian Curling Association.  (PEISAA classifications apply)

Qualifying Competition:

All registered teams must enter three school organized bonspiels/competitions prior to the PEISAA Provincial Championships.

Each of the participating schools will host a bonspiel.

Each school must have four curlers and a school representative present at all competitions.

Bonspiels / competitions must have a minimum of three schools participating.

Provincial Competition: 2nd Saturday in February

Each school may enter only one team in each championship classification: Midget   Senior

Awards

Medals shall be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in all divisions. (max 5)

P.E.I.S.A.A. Championship bar and Banner shall be awarded in each classification to the winning Midget and Senior schools.

Cross - Country

Rules:

The official rules of P.E.I.S.A.A. cross country shall be those of the CTFA (P.E.I.S.A.A. Classifications apply).

Classifications and Distances:
Pre-Novice Boys 1.6 km Pre-Novice Girls 1.6 km
Novice Boys 2.4 km Novice Girls 2.4 km
Bantam Boys 3.2 km Bantam Girls 2.4 km
Midget Boys 4 km Midget Girls 3.2 km
Senior Boys 4.8 km Senior Girls 4 km

A. No limit to the number of runners from a school at the zone level. Schools must compete at the zone level to be eligible for provincial championships. The top 5 teams from each zone qualify for provincial championships.

B. Each school which competes in a zone meet may send a maximum of 7 runners per classification to the provincials. Runners must have completed in the zone meet. Only the top 5 runners shall count in the scoring. The individuals competing in the team competition must be identified by the school prior to competing.

C. Individual runners who have competed at the zone meet and finished in the top 20 shall be permitted to compete as individuals at the provincial meet. Their orders of finish shall not be considered in determining team scores. They shall, however, be eligible for individual awards.

Awards:  

Medals for the top 3 finishers in each division and ribbons for all competitors in the top 10

Championship bar for the top team in each division based on the finish of 5 members of the team

Championship banner for the top team in Midget and Senior Divisions

Field Hockey

Rules:

C.W.F.H.A rulebook shall govern P.E.I.S.A.A. field hockey with the following special rules. (P.E.I.S.A.A. Classifications apply).

Duration of Games:

          unless otherwise agreed upon before the game.

Substitution:

A team shall be permitted unlimited substitution during a stoppage of play, except for the award of a corner, penalty corner, or penalty stroke.

Time Outs:

A team shall be permitted 1 one minute time out per half of play, during a stoppage, except for the award of a corner, penalty corner or penalty stroke. Time outs are not accumulative.

Breaking Ties: (During play-offs only)

Qualifying Competition:

Shall be decided by Commissioner and coaches prior to start of regular season play.

Awards

Uniforms and Equipment

Goaltenders - goaltenders are required to wear a shatterproof full facemask designed so that openings are not large enough for a field hockey ball or stick to pass through and contact the fact. Goaltenders must wear a uniform shirt of a colour different than that of the two teams.

Players - all players must wear mouthguards and shin pads.

Golf

Rules:

Rules of the Canadian Golf Association shall govern all golf competitions for P.E.I.S.A.A.

Qualifying Competitions:

1. All registered teams must enter 2 tournaments prior to Provincial Championships.

2. Each of the zones will host at least one tournament.

3. Each school can enter up to 8 golfers per tournament, but must have a minimum of 4 in order to participate.

4. For an individual golfer to qualify for school team, he/she must have competed in at least one of the tournaments.

5. The weekly tournaments must have a minimum of 2 schools registered.

Provincial Competition Senior (3rd Tuesday - October) Midget ( 2nd Tuesday - June )

Each school may enter one team only in each championship classification and a maximum 5 golfers. The top 4 scores (gross) will make up the team score in determining provincial champions.

PEI School Athletic Association Gymnastics Technical Handbook

Revised November 2006

OBJECTIVES

This program is designed to promote participation; and to make it easier for coaches or physical educators to prepare gymnasts while still giving attention to other programs.

Points to Remember

1. Gymnasts should be dressed without jewelry or anything which would catch on apparatus or dig into the gymnast.

2. a) Gymnasts must use bare feet or gymnastics slippers during competition.

b) All male gymnasts must wear shorts and a t-shirt

c) All female gymnasts must wear shorts and t-shirt or a body suit.

3. a) In floor exercise, in all categories, a gymnast must present a pose at the beginning and at the end of his or her routine on the mat surface.

b) Gymnasts must signal judges on the gymnastics floor prior to his or her floor routine/vault.

4. Skills are to be done as listed in the handbook in all categories. Any additional skills or modifications of skill is subject to execution deductions. Ex. Cartwheel vs. one hand cartwheel.

5. Connecting moves are permitted however they are evaluated on their executions although they may not appear in this handbook. eg, 1/2 turns on floor, dive roll finish with feet cross, etc.

6. Additional skills or poses are permitted, but they will also be subject to deductions when not executed property. In a routine, the number of skills means the number of "different skills". (See list of skills attached)

7. A gymnast must use the skills from his or her level classification.

Advancing from Unit to Provincial Championships

All classifications - the top 20 gymnasts, including the top three teams will advance to Provincials from the Unit meet with a maximum of seven gymnasts per school. No school will be allowed to bring more than 7 gymnasts per. category. However, if there are only 2 schools participating at the Unit meet, each of these schools may bring an extra 3 gymnasts for a total of 10. The seven gymnasts designated to represent their school must be identified by the school’s coach / designate before the beginning of the PEISAA Provincial Championship. Falling to do so , the team will be eliminated from team competition.

Awards

* Individual events - three top gymnasts per event will receive ribbons

* Top individual - the top three will receive medals the remaining top ten will receive ribbons

* The winning team in each classification will receive a Championship bar

All Around Team Championship

Team Score:

Team scores are tabulated by adding the top 5 vaults and top 5 floor routines.

To constitute a team, a school must have at least 5 gymnasts. If you have 4 or less they can participate but cannot win a team award.

GYMNASTICS JUDGING

It is recommended that for each event a referee be appointed.

Duties of Referee

1. Count the skills in the participant’s routine.

2. Identify the skills from the appropriate category.

3. Add one point or more for each skill from the appropriate category and give total to the judges.

Duties of Judges

It is recommended that for each event a minimum of two judges be appointed.

Judges deduct points or fractions of points on the execution of each skill. The judges than total these deductions for each routine and subtract the total from the number supplied by the referee.

 

RECOMMENDED DEDUCTIONS

Small Faults 0.10 small bent leg

Medium Faults 0.20 - 0.30 major bent leg

Large Faults 0.40 more than 3 steps

0.50 fall on 1 or both hands, knees, or hips

Body Posture Faults (form break)

- poor foot, head position, or arms work throughout entire exercise 0.20 each

- bent arms in support, or bent knees 0.20 each

-leg separation 0.15 each

- relaxed leg/body/trunk. posture throughout exercise 0.20 each

Technical Faults

- insufficient height of gymnastic leaps and jumps 0.20 each

- insufficient height of acrobatic elements with flight 0.20 each

- insufficient tuck, pike, or stretch position 0.20 each

- insufficient split position (when required) 0.15 each

- turn incomplete or ended too late 0.20 each

Age Categories

Pre Novice Under 10 on February 1st of school year

Novice Under 12 on February 1st of school year

Bantam Under 14 on February 1st of school year

Pre Novice Boys, Pre Novice Girls, Novice Boys, Bantam Boys

Scoring

All floor routines must contain 8 skills, non difficult and difficult skills. It must also include a starting pose and a ending pose. Start value should be 10.0

Start value is the maximum amount of points that judges may begin their deductions.

For floor routines, scoring is based on execution only. ( i.e. bent knees, improper body angles, falls etc.)

All floor routines must contain at least eight (8) skills of which 2 skills must be from the difficulty liste provide in the PEISAA handbook.

All floor routines must also contain a starting and ending pose worth .5 each.

In Pre Novice Girls only, with reference to the beginning and ending poses, gymnasts must create a pose to start and end a routine on the mat. Be creative.

For Pre Novice Boys Novice Boys and Bantam Boys the beginning and ending poses will consist of raising one arm prior and at the end of his routine on the mat. Judged on execution only.

A beginning signal will consist of raising one arm prior to stepping on the mat. Judges will signal first to let gymnasts know they are ready for them. An ending signal will consist also of raising one arm after their ending pose to signal that they have finished their routines. There is no value for the beginning and ending signals.

Start values:

For a routine to have a starting value of 10 points a gymnasts must have:

* Beginning and ending poses 2 skills .5 each 1.0 points

* 6 non difficult skills 6 skills 1.0 each 6.0 points

* 2 difficult skills 2 skills 1.5 each 3.0 points

Total 10 points

If your gymnast is missing 1 difficult skill you must replace it with a non difficult skill.

Value of routine is 9.5

* Beginning and ending poses 2 skills .5 each 1.0 points

* 7 non difficult skills 7 skills 1.0 each 7.0

* 1 difficult skill 1 skill 1.5 each 1.5

Total 9.5 points

If your gymnast does not have any difficulty skills at all you must have 8 non difficult skills and have a starting value of 9.0

* Beginning and ending poses 2 skills .5 each 1.0 points

*8 non difficult skills 8 skills 1.0 each 8.0

* 0 difficult skill 0 skill 1.5 each 0.0

Total 9.0 points

Novice Girls- Bantam Girls

Scoring

All routines must contain 10 skills which includes poses, non difficult and difficult skills.

Start value should be 10. See example at bottom.

The start value is the maximum amount of points where judges begin their deductions.

The floor routine scoring is based on bent knees, improper body angles, falls etc.

All floor routine must contain at least eight (8) skills of which 2 skills must be from the difficulty liste provide in the PEISAA handbook.

3. Continuity and flow - this means how a routine is put together so that all skills connect to give a nice flow to your routine. This includes levels such as high and lows and the rhythm of the routine.

4. Use of entire floor - gymnasts must make a effort to cover at least 3/4 of the length of the floor space.

Start values:

For a routine to have a start value of 10.0 a gymnasts must have:

* Beginning and ending poses 2 skills .3 each 0.6 points

* 6 non difficult skills 6 skills 1.0 each 6.0

* 2 difficult skills 2 skills 1.5 each 3.0

* Expression of style 0.1

* Continuity and flow 0.2

* Use of entire floor 0.1

Total 10 points

Amount of Seating Available: seating required must handle 400 spectators

(Bleachers or balcony area)

Change Rooms: minimum of 2 rooms needed

Lunch Facilities: A lunch area is required for participants

P.A. System: A working P.A. system operating from the gymnasium is necessary

Preference given to schools able to provide canteen service

Equipment: Floor exercise - good quality mats which adhere together well

Minimum 2 strips - 40' each

- 2 landing mats plus 2 crash mats

- 2 vaulting runway

Vaulting horse :

- 2 vaults suede or leather top surface - 2 required

- one minimum height - 100 cm

- one minimum height -110 cm

Vaulting Board:

- minimum - 2 vaulting board

Orienteering

Rules: Rules governing P.E.I.S.A.A. orienteering shall be those of the Canadian Orienteering Association. (P.E.I.S.A.A. Classifications apply).

Qualifying & Provincial Competition: A zone qualifying meet shall be held.

Gold , silver and bronze medals for participants placing 1st , 2nd, and 3rd , and ribbons for participants placing 4th through 10th

Rules: Rules of the Canadian Rugby Union shall govern P.E.I.S.A.A. rugby. (P.E.I.S.A.A. classifications apply)

Qualifying Competition:

Play-off format shall be decided by Commissioner and coaches prior to the start of regular season play.

Provincial Competition: 1st week in June

Provincial Championship Tournament with site to be determined by commissioner as directed by championship site policy guidelines.

Track & Field

Rules:

The rules governing P.E.I.S.A.A. Track & Field shall be those of the Canadian Track & Field Association. (P.E.I.S.A.A. classifications apply) + the rule change: the top six (6) competitors in the horizontal jumps and throws after their first three (3) trials will have three (3) additional jumps or throws. (The Canadian Track & Field Association states the top eight competitors.)

Qualifying Competition:

A. 

Each zone shall hold a qualifying meet with the top four finishers in each classification advancing to the provincial meet.
Exception 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 metre relays 2 per zone / classification

B. Each competitor may enter a maximum of three events plus relays.

Provincial Competition:

The provincial meets: novice, bantam, midget and senior events.

Provincial Interscholastic Track And Field Meet - Technical Package

Format for Track Events:

100 metres: top 4 from each heat to the final

200 metres: top 4 from each heat to the final

400 metres: Timed finals

8 slowest qualifiers from the zones in heat 1

8 fastest qualifiers from the zones in heat 2

800 metres straight final

1500 metres: straight final

3000 metres: straight final

Relays: 2 relays from each zone with timed finals based on a random draw

Format for Field Events:

Throws: All competitors receive 3 throws, top 6 competitors receive 3 additional throws

Horizontal Jumps: All competitors receive 3 throws, top 6 competitors receive 3 additional throws

High Jump: Opening heights to be determined by the head field judge

Provincial Interscholastic Track And Field Meet - Facilities and Equipment

1. 400 Meter track, ideally with 8 lanes around and 8 lanes for the 100 m. (all events will be finals), minimum width 6 lanes around.

2. Dressing and washrooms located in close proximity to the track.

3. An area located away from the track and field set up for javelin.

4. Infield events located in a manner so safety is a high priority. (i.e. discus, etc.)

5. Canteen facilities are not absolutely necessary but a valuable asset in making the day pleasant for athletes and officials.

6. The following is a check list for equipment:

Track:

1 starting gun, 1 backup gun, shells, 2 whistles, finish line, 3 clipboards, baton, 10 tongue depressors, 7 stopwatches, pencils, and 2" x 3" cards for judges and timers.

Field & Other:

Rule books, change rooms, ribbons, P.A. system, 1.4 kilo shot, 1.6 kilo shot, 1 ladies discus, 1 intermediate discus (medium, boys, etc), 1 ladies javelin, 1 intermediate javelin, 3-4 crash mats, 2 high jump standards, 2-3 high jump cross bars, 6 clipboards and pencils, 6 sets of field marks, boundary markings for shot, discus, and javelin, bucket of lime and line marker, 2 tables, 4 chairs, (announcer and recorders), circles for shot and discus, check jumping boards, recording sheets for recorders, recording sheets for field events, measuring tapes - shot 20m, discus 50m or 75m, javelin 75m long, triple and high small, waste disposal - garbage containers, 2 shovels, 2 rakes, and sand for pits.

Volleyball

Rules:

The rules of the Canadian Volleyball Association shall govern P.E.I.S.A.A. Volleyball. (P.E.I.S.A.A. Classifications apply.)

For Midget Classification, net height will be 2.24 m for boys and 2.13 m for girls.

Officials:

For league play and zone and provincial tournaments officials shall be supplied by the P.E.I.V.A.

Qualifying and Provincial Competition:

Senior : 1st Fri & Sat of Nov. Midget 2nd Fri and Sat of Nov

Shall be determined by Commissioner and coaches prior to the start of regular season play.

  • Championship bars for provincial winners.
  • Banners for midget and senior provincial championship.
  • Milk Sport medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place team members in all classifications. ( max 15 )

Volleyball Site Requirements:

  • Courts - Minimum 1 Regulation Court
  • Dimensions of Floor - Court size as per Volleyball Canada Regulations
  • Minimum 2 metre clearance from all walls
  • Ceiling Height - Minimum 22 feet
  • Floor - Hardwood or Uniturf
  • Amount of Seating - Minimum seating required to handle competitors
  • - Preference given to schools with bleacher facilities
  • Change Rooms - Minimum of two change rooms necessary
  • - Preference given to schools with change rooms and showers available.

Rules:

The official rules governing P.E.I.S.A.A. wrestling shall be those of the International Amateur Wrestling Federation (FILA), with the following additional illegal holds: full nelson, salton, and suplay.

Provincial Competition:  3rd Sat. of April

Each zone must participate in a qualifying meet with the top three in each weight class advancing to the provincial tournament.

Qualifying Competition:

In order for a weight class to be contested and team points to be awarded there must be at least two competitors in the class.

Westling Site Requirements:

  • Gymnasium large enough to hold at least 3 wrestling surfaces.
  • At least 2 locker rooms and showers.
  • Adequate P.A. System.
  • Stands or room enough to sit at least 100 wrestlers and spectators.
  • Room available for weighing. Could also be used as an officials' room.
  • Each wrestling surface should have at least a 1 meter protection area.
