Professional DevelopmentThe PEITLA supports many professional development activities initiated by the Department of Education, the University of Prince Edward Island, our parent group the P.E.I. Teachers' Federation and the three school districts in P.E.I. We are one of the most active professional groups on Prince Edward Island, and we often partner with other organizations to host mutually beneficial events. Listed here are several of our more active professional development activities.

Curriculum Marketplace

To give Teacher-Librarians and Library Contacts a chance to meet and discuss new curriculum initiatives with the different Department Consultants, the Department of Education hosted a day consisting of small group information and discussion sessions with the participating Consultants. Of particular interest this year were the afternoon sessions for all personnel, facilitated by the Information Technology Consultants, concerning the new Journey On documentation. Following the general introductory session were information/discussion sessions at the Elementary, Intermediate, and Senior High School Levels with the corresponding Technology Consultant.

Information Technology Workshops

Each year, the Department of Education hosts a series of Information Technology workshops for teacher-librarians. Several choices are offered and teacher-librarians sign up for sessions that best meet their needs and IT skill level. This approach helps us meet the varied needs of teacher-librarians with diverse experiences with IT.

Graduate Certificate in School Librarianship

The Graduate Certificate in School Librarianship is designed to give qualified teachers the basic knowledge in the role and operation of elementary and secondary school libraries, with special attention to the role of the teacher-librarian. The Certificate provides the groundwork for further study in the Diploma in School Librarianship or in the Master of Education in Leadership in Learning. To be awarded a Certificate in School Librarianship, candidates must successfully complete all five core courses. For more information visit the Graduate Certificate website.
