SCHOOL SERVICES
GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING: The school has a full-time school counsellor on staff. Children and parents are encouraged to avail themselves of her services, whenever such a need is felt. Classes have regularly scheduled time with the school counsellor.
LIBRARY/RESOURCE CENTRE:
The school has an excellent library facility. Please encourage your child to use the Library. All children receive formal instruction in the use of the Library. We are updating and refreshing our Library with our Indigo Award money.
RESOURCE: Our Resource program provides support to those students who are having some difficulty in some aspect of the regular curriculum. Children are given support in a small group situation or the resource teacher may go in the classroom and work together with the home room teacher.
READING RECOVERY: Reading Recovery is an effective literacy intervention designed to reduce the number of children with reading and writing difficulties in an educational system. Six year old, grade one students who are reading or writing at a lower level that his/her peers are eligible for the Reading Recovery program.
YOUTH WORKER: The Youth Worker (Kenny Stanley) will be providing many services at Prince Street School.
Specific educational behaviour management, social and life skill programs
provide crisis intervention
provide community outreach services to students with absenteeism problems
liaising with families through home visits, phone calls and meetings
observing behaviour and providing input in the development of individual educational plans
providing programs such as: anger management, substance abuse, bully prevention and parent education
MUSIC AND CHOIR:
In addition to regular
classes, there are comprehensive choir, program for interested children. There
is a junior choir for grades 1-3 and a senior choir for grades 4-6. We
also have a percussion club for students in grades 5 and 6. This is
conducted outside of regular school hours, at recess and/or lunch times.
Children are encouraged to participate and a commitment to the rehearsal times
is essential for success.
FRENCH: Starting in grade four, all children are required to study French as a second language.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION:
We encourage children to dress themselves as appropriately as possible for gym
class. Gym shoes are extremely desirable. In the event your child does not have
gym shoes, he or she will be required to go on bare feet on the gym floor for
safety reasons. Gym shoes with dark soles cannot be used in the Prince Street
School gym.
There is a comprehensive intramural program for grades four to six at lunch hour. Children are encouraged to participate.
BREAKFAST PROGRAM:
Volunteers will be serving breakfast to students at Prince Street School.
The Breakfast Program is a joint project of Healthy Eating Alliance and the Eastern School District. This is a universal program, and will be offered to all students at no charge. This is possible because of the generous support of our major sponsors, Great Canadian Bagel and Purity Dairy. The breakfast program will operate on school days between 7:45 and 8:15 a.m. When school is delayed or cancelled, or on holidays and professional development days, breakfast will not be served at school.
Volunteers will stop serving breakfast at 8:15, and students will not be permitted to take food out of the Breakfast Program area. Volunteers are needed for this program. Please contact the school at 368-6950 if you are able to volunteer.
HOT LUNCHES:
Hot lunches (e.g. hot dogs and pizza) are made available to children. The cost is kept to the minimum. Parents will be notified of hot lunch arrangements several days in advance. Our classrooms are also equipped with small microwave ovens. During the cold weather months, the children may find bringing lunches that can be heated a little more appetizing

SUPPLIES: At the end of June, teachers sent home a list of basic classroom
supplies which students are expected to acquire for the year. Grade 1 students may obtain all supplies through the school. Please check with your child's teacher concerning the cost of this program. Below you will find the supplies needed for each grade level.

SCHOOL MILK/JUICE PROGRAM:
FIELD TRIPS: During the school year, classes participate in various field trips. Parental permission slips are sent home several days before. Children must have written permission to go on a trip. Those who are without slips, and whose parents cannot be contacted, will not be permitted to go with the class.
SCHOOL SKATE PROGRAM:
Information about this program will be made available later in the year.SCHOOL NURSE: The Public Health Nurse is in school weekly to provide various health-care services to the school children. Our school nurse is Michele Miller. She can be contacted at 368-0593. She will be our school on Tuesday mornings.
PRINCE STREET HOME & SCHOOL ASSOCIATION:
We have an active Home and School Association that holds regular meetings through the year. We encourage all parents to become members of the Association and attend these meetings.SUPERVISION: There are two teachers on duty at the bus drop-off from 8:10 - 8:30 and from 2:30 until the last bus leaves. Children are supervised during recess and lunch hour. There is no supervision provided after dismissal at 2:30. We advise children not to arrive too early at school in the morning.
In the event of poor weather, the teachers on duty may permit the children to come in before 8:20. When this happens, students are to go directly to their classrooms.
Grade Six children are selected to help teachers by looking after doors, and ensuring that students enter the building safely. The Grade 6 students are acting under guidelines laid down by the teachers, and all pupils are required to obey them.
SMART START: We do have a Smart Start preschool program for ages 22 months to five years run by C.H.A.N.C.E.S. They are located in a classroom next to the Gym. To inquire about this program, call 367-3043.
We also have a parent drop-in centre. This is free of charge and is open Tuesday to Thursday mornings from 9:00 - 11:45. This is open to preschoolers and parents and is staffed by C.H.A.N.C.E.S.
AWARDS: Thanks to the generosity of Miss Lena C. McLure, a former Prince Street School student, awards for pupils have been established. The Lena C. McLure Awards are given each year to pupils in grade six who show high academic achievement as well as outstanding school spirit. Many students are recognized each year.
Libba and Douglas Mobbs have very kindly established the Jeff Mobbs Memorial Award. This award, which consists of a trophy and $50.00, will be awarded each year to the grade three pupil who best exemplifies outstanding school spirit.
We would like to provide you information about the various workshops and holidays during the year 2009-2010. We hope this information will be found useful in making your personal plans.
