Library

The library at QEES is centrally located making it the focal point of the building. It is situation on the main level surrounded by an upper level of classrooms. A daily circulation of books is processed through our automated circulation system. Within our collection of resources there is a professional section for our teachers and parents.

A Teacher Librarian staffs the library. The library program includes book exchange,  cooperative planned units with every grade level, occasional visits from authors  and special guests. Grade 1 students are given added time to concentrate on story time, author studies, library skills and complimentary classroom studies.

Music

Students at Queen Elizabeth Elementary experience music class activities based on the PEI Music Curriculum, our Share The Music Grade 1-6 Music Books and Orff based philosophy of music education. Students "play" with music starting at their development level and building that natural pattern of music literacy from grades 1-6. Such creative play is expressed through singing, chanting, rhythm, body percussion, dramatization, composing, instruments, reading and exploring music from our world. Extracurricular activities involve choir (grade 1-6),orff ensemble (grade 5&6), musical drama (grade 4-6) and musical chorus (grade 1-6). Our fall and early winter activities focus on performances for the Children's Wish Christmas CD in early October and the Christmas Concert in late November early December. Rehearsals for the Spring Musical Concert begins in fall or late winter.

French

Students in grades 4, 5 and 6 have Core French classes on a regular basis in a 6 day cycle.  Emphasis is placed on active participation through the use of activity workbooks, texts,  projects, and speaking and listening to the French language. Focus on gaining appreciation and knowledge of the French culture is an integral part of the program.

Physical Education

The Physical Education program offered at Queen Elizabeth Elementary follows the P.E.I. Department of Education guidelines. Early stages of the Physical Education program focus on a movement approach. These early movement experiences hopefully contribute to game success in the upper grades. The elementary grades 4-6 pursue games like volleyball and basketball. In addition there is a very comprehensive intramural and after school program. Our school also has a very active Leadership Counsel who are involved with organizing and overseeing a multitude of school activities.

Technology

Queen Elizabeth Elementary School strives to integrate technology into the curriculum. Children are taught how to search and retrieve information on the world wide web and school board approved programs under their teacher’s guidance in a well equipped computer lab. Every child has access to the school library database from the lab thereby encouraging independent searching. All classrooms are equipped with four speaker FM Soundfield Systems. This promotes equal learning opportunities and is very beneficial to the teacher as well. As the years progress, we intend to continue to do our best to keep on the cutting edge of technology.

Peer Mediation

Queen Elizabeth Elementary School has a very vibrant Peer Mediation Program. Peer Mediators are students (grade 4-6) who, with supervising and training, mediate disputes of a non-serious matter between fellow students. Student Mediators must be fair, reliable, responsible, and good communicator.
Conflicts between students are a part of daily life in schools. Conflicts that are most common include name-calling, rumors, threats, and friendships gone amiss. Mediation is a conflict resolution approach whereby those in disagreement have a chance to sit face to face and talk, uninterrupted, so each side of the dispute can be heard. After the problem has been defined solutions are created and then evaluated. Mediation is a skill that involves good communication, problem solving and critical thinking.

Peaceful School International

Queen Elizabeth Elementary School was formally admitted into the League of Peaceful Schools on
June 21, 2000. Since our admission the organization has restructured. It is now know as Peaceful
Schools International. There has been much time and effort devoted to anti-bullying over the years
with an ongoing focus on the promotion of positive social behavior amongst all work and play at
Queen Elizabeth Elementary. Each year the school plans a Peace Walk and recently participated in
the internationally growing movement “Pink Day”. The school’s Peace Garden is a constant reminder
of the beauty of peace.
