Dave Thomas (1932-2002) is one of the most famous entrepreneurs in the
world. He first started working in restaurants at the age of 12. From
there on, his ambitions and goals grew more and more, and the first Wendy’s
restaurant opened in Columbus, Ohio in 1969. At this time, Dave had much
experience with managing restaurants as he had been heavily involved in
Kentucky Fried Chicken franchises. By the time of their 10th
anniversary in 1979, Wendy’s had 1767 restaurants in Canada, the US,
Puerto Rico and Europe. Dave has concluded that his biggest mistake was
dropping out of high school so he could get hands-on experience in the
restaurant business. In 1993, Dave earned his GED. Over the years, he has
also received honorary degrees at different universities around the US,
and many Entrepreneur of the Year awards.
