Wallace and Harrison McCain are the sons of the late A.D. and Laura
McCain. In 1955, Harrison was keen to start his own business, to follow in
his fathers foot steps. He wanted Wallace to work with him, but wasn’t
going to wait for him, to make up his mind. Their brother Bob came up with
the idea of starting a french fry production plant. They had decided after
doing some research, that there was going to be a growing demand for
frozen french fries. Harrison, Wallace, Bob, and another brother Andrew
pooled their money and got a government grant to start their french fry
plant. In1957, Wallace and Harrison started their french fry production
plant in Florenceville, NB. The process had looked easy on paper but
Harrison and Wallace were soon spending all their time doing repairs to
the machinery. Eventually McCain’s bought Day & Ross to lower their
trucking costs, and meet their shipping demands. There was also not enough
potato farmers in Carleton County to meet the demands of the plant, so
McCain’s bought there own land, to grow their own potatoes. In the early
1960's the french fry market kept growing, so McCain’s built more plants
in New Brunswick and Maine. They also bought other frozen food processing
companies through out the world. Today McCain’s produces not only french
fries, but frozen vegetables, pizzas, fruit juices, and more. They have
now opened plants all over Canada, United States, Australia and Europe.
