This course provides students the opportunity to develop an understanding and appreciation of the environment. Throughout the course, an investigation is conducted into both the theoretical and practical aspects of many ecological principles and environmental issues which affect Islanders. Topics covered include :
PEI Wildlife (its history, management, and native species)
Ecology (basic introduction to ecology, environmental issues on PEI)
Forestry (tree identification, PEI's forest types, local issues)
Survival (basic cold climate survival skills)
Orienteering (map reading, how to use a compass, outdoor navigation)
Cross Country Skiing (proper techniques and outdoor application of learned skills)
The Water Cycle & Soils (composition of PEI's soils, effects of the hydrological cycle)
Canoeing (basic paddling techniques and water safety by certified canoe instructors) |
The skills that are relevant to accessing the outdoor environment (i.e. canoeing, orienteering) are taught to help students gain a better understanding of the environment and how to properly access it and appreciate it.
As the focus of this course is on learning about the local environment and its issues, a small portion of the course is conducted outdoors; student participation in the outdoor component is mandatory. Students should also be prepared to copy a large volume of notes on a regular basis as there is no course textbook. Class notes will cover the theory on which students will be tested.
Conservation 521X is recognized as an academic science credit.
