Mathematicians

Hey There! I'm Frankie the Fractal! Although I look like a crazy geometric pattern, I'm really a very complex mathematical formula. When fractals were first invented by mathematicians several decades ago it took the computers days to make me, now it takes mere seconds! Scientists not only use me to make beautiful patterns, they also help humanity in many different ways, for example, weather-forecasters use fractals to forecast bad weather and storms that may be headed your way. Seismologists also use fractals to analyze earthquakes. Fractals are also used in more recent years to squeeze High Definition Television signals through low-band cable wires. We also play a hand in creating computer-assisted animations like those seen in Toy Story and Finding Nemo!

Besides that, people use fractals like myself every single day, some people have screen-savers featuring yours truly, while others have special software that creates a new fractal for their desktop background every few minutes. I can also be found in everyday shapes in nature, my favorite being inside sea-shells like the one seen at the bottom of the page. If you look for me, you may see me in some very strange places, the forest, the ocean, the plains, in snow flakes, almost everywhere!

Thanks for coming on this awesome tour of how fractals are used and help in our lives!

Below are some things where you can see fractals in nature.
