Jonnies Mathematical Lesson
Jonnie had just got home from school one day and was telling his mother how he was confused about what he had learned that day in math about fractions. He didn’t really understand how to do them. He told his mom that his teacher had told him that fractions in everyday life but he didn’t understand how.
Luckily his mother was cooking pizza for supper and she would try to help him understand a little better about how to do fractions, and how he would always run into fraction everyday. Jonnie was excited to see how fractions worked.
Soon it was supper time and the pizza was on the table waiting for the family to eat. So his sister Lilly, his father Jake, his mother Sandy and him all sat around the table waiting to enjoy the delicious pizza his mom had made.
Sandy then told, "Jonnie I have 1 whole pizza, when I cut it down the middle and remove one half, how much do I have now?"
Jonnie tells her " There is half of a pizza,"
"That’s right Jonnie you have ½ a pizza, you just recognized a fraction," she tells him.
Then Sandy puts the other piece back on the tray and cuts it into 4 pieces and asks him again what she has. He tells her "There is 4 pieces of pizza."
Sandy explains to him that when you take 1 whole pizza and cut it into 4 pieces and then give one to each member of the family and each family member will have ¼ of the pizza. Jonnie gets excited and asks if he can guess what would happen if she cut it int 8 pieces. Sandy cuts it into 8 pieces and he attempts to make more guess’s.
"If we all get 1 piece of pizza, there will be 4/8 of the pizza left right?"
"Yes Jonnie that is right or you could reduce it down and you would have ½ of the pizza left." Sandy tells him. Jonnie then gets excited to go to school the next day to tell all his friends and teacher what he learned about fraction that night at supper time.
When Jonnie arrives at school the next day he asks his teacher
, "Mrs. McQuaid would I be able to help show the class how to identify
fractions in the real world , such as eating pizza?" Mrs. McQuaid is very
happy that Jonnie is interested in fractions so she allows him to show them his
demonstration.
