One day, Ralph was doing some work around his house, and he decided that he wanted to work on his garden. He was outside working for about an hour when his brother Fred called him from the hospital. Fred told him that Fred’s wife, Rita, was having a baby and that the doctors said that it could arrive in as little as 3 hours. Ralph congratulated them and asked what they were going to name their child. Fred said that he didn’t know, but he knew that Rita would want Ralph to be with them when the child is born and she would also like his help in naming the baby, whether it was a boy or a girl. Ralph looked at his watch and hesitated. Ralph lives in Macville, while Fred lives in Sherville and that he would be at the local hospital. Ralph also knows that it is 380km to Sherville from Macville, so he would have to drive fairly fast for him to make it within 3 hours. Ralph says that he will be there and hangs up the phone. Ralph runs to his bedroom, changes and is out the door in 3 minutes.
Ralph thinks in his head as he is leaving his house. He knows that distance = velocity multiplied by time. He also knows that he has to go 380km in 3 hours, so his formula would look like:
380km = ? Km/h multiplied by 3 hours
so he figures that ? Km/h = 380km = 126.6 km/h

He finds out that he would have to go at least 126 km/h to make it in time for the baby’s arrival, also making sure he doesn’t get stuck in traffic or seen by any police officers.
He starts on his way and decides to go 130 km/h just to be sure he makes it there in time. He travels about 350 km with no trouble when he gets slowed down to about 80 km/h in a little bit of traffic. He knows he’s been travelling for a little more that 2 ½ hours, so he thinks of the formula in his head again.

Velocity = 80 km/h
Time = ?
So Time = Distance = 30km
Velocity 80 km/h
He finds this should take him about 2/5 of an hour, so about 12 minutes. He realizes this will be just fine to make it to the hospital, so he continues this way until he reaches the hospital. Rita has her baby 10 minutes after `Ralph arrives.
