History of the Muscle Car

The muscle car era is traditionally credited with starting in 1964 with an idea born by the Pontiac mind trust of Division Chief John DeLorean (yes, that John DeLorean) and the division's advertising executive Jim Wangers. They took the Pontiac Tempest body, put in a 389 cu.in. engine, and gave it a new name- G.T.O. The goal was to sell 5000 of the cars, but by year-end they sold 32,000 and were unable to build enough to meet demand. With it's light-weight body, below 15 second quarter mile times, bucket seats and floor shifter the GTO was the first car specifically designed and mass marketed for performance at an affordable price to the average Joe.
