|In 2001, Terry Labonte and his No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet
team again found themselves in serious need of a rebound year.
Again, the year disappointed them -- Labonte finished the season in
Labonte was winless for the second straight season after six
consecutive years with at least one victory. He hit a new low when he
became the only driver to compete in all 36 NASCAR Winston Cup
races and not lead a lap.
Labonte changed crew chiefs at the end of the season. Veteran and
1996 Winston Cup championship chief mechanic Gary DeHart moved
to an R&D role with Hendrick Motorsports and Jim Long returned to the
fold as Labonte's crew chief.
The driver, who has 21 career victories, had only one top-5 and three
top-10 finishes, but eight DNFs. Qualifying was no better for Labonte,
as he started inside the top 10 only once -- on the Sears Point road
Despite his rough year, Labonte did reach the $26 million mark in
career winnings, logging $3,011,901.
Labonte has driven for owner Rick Hendrick since 1994. He won a
Winston Cup championship for Hendrick in 1996, and also won the
crown for owner Billy Hagan in 1984.
Labonte is a former winner of The Winston all-star race and the Busch
Clash, and was also the International Race of Champions (IROC)
