Province House
of Prince Edward Island

The Province House construction was completed in 1847.  It is a neo-classical building and was designed by Isaac Smith to house the Provincial Legislature and administrative offices.  It also housed the P.E.I.'s supreme court until 1872.  Today, Province House still houses the Legislative Assembly and is a national historic site, managed by Parks Canada  It was here in September of 1864 that the first conference on Confederation was held.  Delegates from P.E.I., New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Canada met here at Province House in the Legislative Council chamber, presently this is known as the Confederation Chamber, to begin discussions on Confederation which took place in 1867.  Tours are available.
