Pioneer Life
Grade four students in Anne McCarron's class at SKC
began their school year by looking back and thinking about pioneer life.
They quickly learned how easy they have it nowadays!
They enjoyed reading the novel "Little House in the Big Woods", and worked
on all kinds of assignments. They searched through the novel to find comparisons of life
then and now. Did you know pioneers used to color their butter with carrot juice?
That's just one interesting fact they learned!
The students searched the Internet for information about pioneers to complete
a series of learning activities. They found out about medicines they used,
ways they travelled, food they ate, and homes they built.
To complete the unit, they had a field trip to "Orwell Corner", a local pioneer village.
Here is a story by Katelyn Johnston about that visit.
