The school bell rang. It rang twice with that solid sense of purpose that meant that
the person ringing it knew that she was ringing it to mark the end of school. Or,
more importantly the beginning of the summer break. Brittany carefully picked up her kitbag
from off her desk and fought her way through the oncoming tide of
students toward the east exit door, where she had arranged to meet Mary-Ellen.
There are several things you need to know, at this stage, about Ashley and
Mary Ellen. Firstly they have been friends since before they can remember and
secondly that Brittany's name was actually 'Mildred Eldora'.
She claimed she had taken the name Brittany after a particularly interesting history
lesson in which Ms Graham, their history teacher, had told them all about the massive
immigration of people from Great Britain. Mary-Ellen knew that it was because she'd never liked the name Mildred
and she certainly wasn't going to allow herself to be called Eldora.
Mary-Ellen turned the corner to see Brittany leaning against the wall reading her
YM magazine.
"Hiya Brit!"
"Hiya Mar. You are thirty five seconds late you know. You have deprived me
of valuable holiday time."
"I think the fact that you are coming on holiday with me will more than
make up for that, don't you think?" said Mary-Ellen sarcastically trying without success to
stuff a year's worth of desk junk into her already bulging kitbag.
"There is that. Anyway, I'm doing you a favor. If it weren't for me you
would have to suffer talking to your brother going on about his favorite
bands and talking about missing his girlfriend for two whole weeks, that
would be hell."
"Have you got no home to go to? I'm about to mop this floor; you can
stay and help me if you like. I've got plenty more to do."
"It's OK Mr Duckett; we're just leaving. We'll leave you to it."
Brittany and Mary-Ellen said goodbye to the janitor and stepped out into the sun,
excited for the holiday that lay ahead. Little did they know that a tremendous
adventure lay ahead of them....
