Hurricane

by Tionna

A hurricane is a severe storm with violent winds and heavy rain dumping dozens of inches of rain in just a day or two, creating massive floods and causing billions of dollars of property damage when they hit heavily populated areas. A hurricane is a tropical cyclone usually lasting a week or more. Hurricanes gather heat and energy through contact with warm ocean waters.

During a hurricane, listen to the radio or T.V for information. Secure your home, close shutters, and take outdoor objects inside for less damage. If you don't secure your home well you are going to have a damaged house on the outside. Avoid using the phone, except for serious emergencies.

Be sure trees and bushes around your home are trimmed well. Turn off any gas, water and electricity. Lock all windows and doors. You should board up all windows in your home so they donít smash. Stay inside at all times only if it is a really big emergency. Sometimes a hurricane can be so big that there are not many houses and buildings left standing.

When you hear on the radio or T.V that a hurricane is coming your way you should go downstairs or go to your safe room.
