Lightning

by Anthony

Lightning is a bright flash of electricity produced by a thunderstorm.

Lightning can travel at speeds up to 60,000 m/s and can also reach temperatures of 30,000įC (54,000įC).

16 million lightning storms in the world occur every year.

The chance of actually being stuck by lightning is about 576,000 to 1.

All thunderstorms have lightning and are very dangerous. Lightning kills more people than hurricanes and tornadoes.

Lightning is an atmospheric discharge of electricity which occurs during volcanic eruptions or dust storms.

The positive charges or protons form at the top of the cloud and the negative charges or electrons form at the bottom of the cloud.

Since opposites attract, that causes a positive charge to build up underground beneath the cloud. The groundís electrical charge concentrates around anything that sticks up such as trees, people and mountains. The charge coming up from these points eventually connects with a charge reaching down from the cloud and-zap-lightning strikes.

Stay indoors! If you hear thunder, donít go outside unless you positively need to.
