Lightning

by Dawson

Lightning ocurrs during thunderstorms, volcanos, and eruptions. Lightning happens very fast. It can travel up to 60,000 miles. Lightning can get hot; it can reach up to 30,000 Celsius.

There are about 16 million lightning storms around the world each year. Lightning is just a bright flash of electricity. Lightning kills and injures more people than tornadoes and hurricanes.

Did you know lightning is just an electric bolt? After a bit, clouds fill up with electrical charge and then shoot out lightning. Lightning strikes earth about 100 times a second.

Lightning looks like it is clear or a white yellow, but it actually depends on the background. The reason we see lightning before thunder is light travels faster than sound. The chances of geting hit by lightning is very low.

Once lightning is gone, the air collapses and makes a big sound wave which makes thunder.

When lightning shoots out of the clouds, it opens a hole called a channel.

Ball lightning is just a big ball of lightning, the size of a grapefruit. It usually comes in red, orange or yellow. Ball lightning hase been reported floating over houses and farms; it is the rarest type of lightning.

Red sprites and ribbon lightning are also rare.

Within a thunder cloud in the sky, lightning is about to shoot out. When it is lightning, you should not be under a tree.
