Thunder is made by lightning which superheats the air around it. This causes a sound wave, a booming sound. Thunder can make different sounds. Lightning is a giant spark in the sky, but often does little damage. It usually strikes tall buildings. Lightning will strike earth about one hundred times a second. Warm, humid conditions are highly favored for thunderstorm development. The chances of being struck are around 1 in 60,000. When lightning strike victims, they will not carry an electrical charge, but should be treated immediately.
Thunder can’t hurt you but lightning can. Around 10,000 forest fires start because of lightning. Lightning is a current of electricity in the sky and will appear in many different forms. Cloud lightning will never hit the Earth. Spider lightning will crawl across the sky for as many as 90 miles. Hail, strong winds, and flash flooding may come with some thunderstorms. A severe thunderstorm may have three quarter inches of hail or more.
