Starting in Grade 4, all students are required to study French as a second language. Grades 4, 5 and 6 have French one half hour per day. The Elementary Core French program is organized around themes that reflect the interests and experiences of students. The materials, called Acti-Vie, offer teachers and students a number of themes from which they will complete throughout the year. Each theme has its own student booklet and workbook. All activities in each theme are designed to help students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully complete a project in French at the end each theme. Some of the Grade 4 themes include School, Birthdays and Celebrations, Animals, Family and the Weather. Grade 5 themes include Friendship, Sports and Collections. Grade 6 themes include the Environment and Conflict Resolution. Within the Core French program, students will be actively involved in their learning of French through a variety of individual, pair, small group and whole class activities which allow for meaningful communication to occur. Effort and participation on the part of the student are essential to their success in the program
