How to create a heritage fair project.
Step 1
Brainstorm to decide on a topic.
Write at least 10 questions of things you want to find out about your topic.
Here are some examples of choices to consider. It should be something you are interested in.

Step 2
Gathering Information
*Use the school library or
the public library to find books or magazines.
*Use the Internet to search for your topic.
*Interview people.
If you can't find enough information on your topic, be prepared to change your topic.
Step 3
Interacting with information
*Take notes about your topic. Remember not to copy word for word.
*Write down your sources of information. You should know the author, title, publisher, and copyright date.
*Collect photos, artifacts and graphics that you can use in your display.
Step 4
Organize Your Information
*Make an outline of your project. Organize your information under specific headings.
*Get your display materials ready. (Backboard, colored paper, photos, letters...)
Step 5
Creating Information
1. Write a rough draft for you project.
-Check your rough draft for spelling mistakes, grammar and
accuracy.
2. Write/type a good copy of your project.
- Don't forget to include a cover page, table of contents,
headings, and bibliography (sources of information).
3. Plan your display and presentation.
-Use colorful paper and markers.
-Make letters large and neat.
-Use some photos and pages from your report to display.
-Practice what you are going to say during your presentation.
Step 6
Sharing and Presenting Information
Your projects will be presented for your class and then during the heritage fair at school. You should have your project should be finished before March Break. The Heritage Fair at St. Jean will be after March Break.
Step 7
Evaluation
The judges will evaluate your project based on:
-level of research 15 points
-originality/creativity 10 points
-impression (what it looks like on the display board) 10 points
-interview (judges will ask you questions about your project) 15 points
Projects from grade 5 and 6 may go on to the provincial heritage fair.
Looking for resources? Try:
-The Provincial Library has a PEI section of books about communities on PEI, old
churches, families.....
-The school library. There are a few books on Island history, plus encyclopedias.
-Interview someone. Your older relatives will probably love to share information about when they were younger.
-The Internet. Don't forget to be really specific in your search. Also read
with a critical eye. Check sources.
