Hi Marcia, We are learning about Christmas in different countries. Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions about the Netherlands. We were wondering... Q: Do you have a lot of snow for Christmas? A: We rarely have snow at Christmas, but it has been known to happen. Q: Is it cold? A: Yes, it is pretty cold and wet. Q: What do you call Santa? A: Sinterklass Q: Did you put up the decorations already? A: No, we decorate for Christmas after December 5th, after the Sinterklass activities. Q: Do you have to go to school on Christmas? A: No, Christmas is a holiday here as well Q: What kind of presents do you get? A: We get letters made form chocolate or pastry, toys, games...and of course surprises Q: What is the date of Christmas? A: Christmas is celebrated on December 25th, Sinterklassfeest starts at the end of November and continues through to December 5th Q: Do you drink eggnog? A: No, the adults drink 'Gluhwijn' (mulled wine) and the kids drink hot chocolate. Q: What do you have for Christmas dinner? A: Usually a four-course meal consisting of a special appetizer, soup, roasted meat- usually chicken or beef- with potatoes, vegetables and salad and a dessert or cheese Q: What kind of decorations do you have? A: We have all kinds of different decorations, mostly all very colourful and sparkling made of glass, plastic, wood or tin. Everyone has a different style of decorating. We also make decorations using felt or paper. Q: Do you have a Christmas tree? A: Yes Q: Do you hang stockings to get presents? A: No, we put a shoe outside our bedroom door Q: Do you put milk and cookies out for Santa? A: No, we put out a carrot for Sinterklass' horse We are going to use this information to make a web page for our school. When it is finished we'll send you the URL.
