Literacy Bits for November

Solving Unfamiliar Words

To attempt an unfamiliar word in reading, your child has to think of a word that would make sense, sound right and look right in a sentence.

- Pre-read your child’s book and determine what might be challenging words. Include those words in your conversation about the book before your child starts reading.

-Resist the temptation to point to the word in the book before your child has the opportunity to problem-solve.

-Remind your child to check the pictures for information

-Ask your child to reread the sentence and think about a word that would make sense, sound right and/or look right

-Ask your child to look for a part in the word that they know, eg. ‘ing’ in swing.

-If your child is beyond the beginning stages of reading, ask him or her to read to the end of the sentence to find more information that might help.

-If your child has attempted the word without success, praise their efforts and say the word.

-Make sure your child knows the meaning of the word that has caused the difficulty.

Dental News

Starting Monday, November 24th, 2008, a Dental Public Health Team will be at St. Jean Elementary to provide preventive dental services. The object of this clinic will provide oral health education and preventive dental services to help reduce or prevent dental decay.

In the first couple of days of the clinic, all children will be seen to determine their risk of dental decay. This is a 2 minute screening check. If you do not wish your children to have this dental screening, please advise the school Administrative Assistant or classroom teacher.

Preventive services including oral health education, cleaning and fluorides, and sealants will then be provided according to each child’s individual needs. It will be necessary for you to sign and return a consent form in order to obtain these services. This form will be distributed to the students once the screenings are complete. There is no cost involved with this clinic and parents are encouraged to drop in to the school to discuss preventive dental care for their children.

Please note only preventive service will be provided, and the screening is not a dental examination. It is strongly recommended that parents take their children to a dentist for regular examinations and treatment, in addition to the preventive services provided

Healthy Eating

Kick Start you Day with Breakfast:

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Kids need a good breakfast to help them concentrate and to make the most of their learning experiences in school. Breakfast prepares you body for the rest of the day. Food is your body’s fuel and it needs a full tank to make it through the day! Try to include 3 of the 4 food groups at breakfast. Including foods such as whole grain breads, milk, cheese, eggs, fruit, oatmeal, and whole grain cereals at breakfast will keep stomachs full until break time. The number one reason people skip breakfast is because they do not have time to eat. Plan breakfast the night before and get out some of the products you will need to help speed up the process. Some people skip breakfast because they are not hungry. In this case try tempting them with a healthy breakfast bar or homemade breakfast muffin and a glass of 100% juice or milk.

Canada Rocks Christmas

Grade 4-6 students of St. Jean will be going to the Confederation Centre to see Canada Rocks Christmas Show.
