Music Program
W
ithin the P.E.I. Education System, music is recognized as an important component of a student's education. The benefits derived from the study of music are many and contribute significantly to a well-rounded education. Music is considered essential to fully prepare students for the world in which they live.

The goals of the elementary music program are:

  • to develop competency in problem solving, critical thinking and decision-making through experiences with  music
  • to develop literacy in music including listening, singing and/or playing instruments, reading and writing music
  • to develop a positive attitude towards music
  • to develop an appreciation of music and the importance of music in our own cultures and others through participation and reflection
  • to contribute to the general development of the learner
  • Therefore, the music program is divided into four major areas or general outcomes that will provide experiences which will be meaningful to the student and lead to the following:
    • musical participation (experiences in creating, listening and performing)
    • musical understanding (experiences in understanding musical concepts)
    • musical appreciation (experiences in valuing the contribution of musicians in the past and present in various cultures)
    • musical technology (experiences in using and applying technologies)

The main curriculum resource at each level is the Music Canada series. However, many other resources are used to fully accomplish the goals of the music program.

French Immersion students do receive music instruction in French although some songs used to teach different concepts may be in English.

Students will receive a music marsk in November, March and June. In the younger grades, the focus is largely on participation, while the older grades do become involved in more theory so as to prepare students for the music classes at junior high if they so choose and are selected for that program.

Music has an inherent value. It is worth learning for its own sake. This quote from Plato wraps it all up:
"Music...gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything."
