Characteristics Of Poetry
Theme- The central meaning of the poem.
Poets write to try to make sense of life and to convey their thoughts about
nature, birth, love, death, families, growing up, and so on.
Poets also create pictures of, and make comments on, social concerns like poverty,
the environment, and technology. They tell stories and put abstract feelings into words.
Images- The pictures the poet creates through language.
Poets are astute observers; they see ordinary people, events,
and objects in a fresh and original way.
Poets are sensitive to the sights, sounds, smells, and textures of things around them.
They see priceless moments and details and the "show" them to the reader
through carefully crafted words.
Diction- The selection of specific words.
Poets choose words carefully and arrange them in the best order: they make every word count.
Poets use rhyme and rhythm, alliteration and assonance, similes and metaphors,
and other poetic techniques to capture the essence of what they mean.
Form- The arrangement of words, lines, verses, rhymes, and other features.
There are different kinds of poems, each governed by its own set of rules for composition.
