Chapter  11 Objectives

Gas Exchange

 

Be able to explain the characteristics of a respiratory surface.

Describe the methods of gas exchange in ameba, paramecia, hydra, earthworms, and grasshoppers.

Be able to label diagrams of the above organisms.

Why are specialized gas exchange systems  necessary for large multicellular organisms?

What are the benefits of respiratory pigments in the blood of an organism?

Explain how gills function in gas exchange for marine organisms.

Be able to identify the the structures of the human respiratory system.

Describe the structure and function of each organ in the human respiratory system.

Explain what occurs during each of the four stages of gas exchange in humans: breathing, external respiration, internal respiration, and gas transport.

Explain what occurs to cause several of the diseases of the respiratory system.

Know how cigarette smoke affects the respiratory system.
