Vernon River Consolidated began its computer
program in 1987 with Commodore 64's and it was one of the first elementary
schools on Prince Edward Island to be computerized. We have progressed
through Apple Laser computers to a lab of 486's and Pentiums with a T1
access line to our new lab of _________________. We also have computers in
every classroom. Over the years the school has won numerous awards and honours for our use of technology, our innovative use of technology in the classroom and our extensive outreach into the communities around us. In 1999 VRCS received the Canadian Innovative Schools Award. From hundreds of schools in the competition across Canada, VRCS was one of 24 selected. This prestigious award recognized VRCS as a leader in the educational use of technology. Students at the school begin computer instruction at the Grade I level. By the time they are in Grade V, many of their projects are being finished on the computer. New curriculum developed by the Department of education has been implemented over the past 3 years and in many cases VRCS already exceeds expectations.
