Welcome Back: Welcome back to another school year! At this time we would like to welcome back all of our returning students, any new students and our new kindergarten students.

We would like to welcome back Lauren O’Brien who is returning after a one-year leave. We would also like to welcome Femke Hakkers who will be teaching grade 4/5 and Mike Sirois, guidance counsellor - both new to Vernon River this year. As well, we welcome back Norah Pendergast who will be teaching French. Lori Targett and Jennifer MacDonald are on maternity leave and Joanne McIsaac is on a one-year leave.

All visitors to the school will be asked to sign in at the main office and wear a visitor tag while in the building.

 

Life-Threatening Allergies: Reminder to parents that Vernon River Consolidated is a peanut restricted school. We have students who have life-threatening allergies to peanuts and peanut products (any food with peanut ingredients).

This year, we also have students who have life-threatening allergies to shellfish (lobster, crab, shrimp, etc.)

Lunches, snacks, bake sales, etc. cannot contain peanut ingredients or shellfish.

We thank parents and students for their cooperation with this extremely important health issue.

 

Attendance: Once again we require that parents notify the school when their child will not be in school. Parents may call the school (651-8520) and inform Helen, send an email hemcisaac@edu.pe.ca or you may send a note with your child on their first day back, explaining their absence. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

 

Milk: White and chocolate milk will be available in both the 250 ml and 500 ml sizes. Prices are as follows: 250 ml white 50 cents 250 ml chocolate 75 cents

500 ml white 75 cents 500 ml chocolate $1.25

 

Bus Notes/Pickup Notes: When a student is being dropped off at a location other than his/her home, parents are asked to please send a bus note indicating so. Also, if a student is being picked up during the day or at the end of the day, please send a note to his/her homeroom teacher indicating this. When a student is picked up from school during the day, he/she is asked to please sign out in the main office.

Bus Stops: Students are asked to be at their bus stop 5 minutes early for the first few weeks of school, until the bus times are coordinated. Thank you for your cooperation.

Office Phone: Students may use the office phone for forgotten lunches or illness only.

 

Forms: Forms have been sent home - please complete and ensure the accuracy of the information listed and return as soon as possible.

 

School Calendar: Please find attached a copy of our school calendar for the 2011-2012 school year. We will notify you of any changes that may occur during the year.

 

Student Accident Insurance: The Department of Education has purchased basic accident coverage for all students in Grades K to 12. Coverage is provided for students at school, at community based-learning activities (school sports events, field trips) and while travelling to and from school and community-based activities. Annual Welcome Back BBQ: The staff at Vernon River Consolidated welcomes all parents and families to join us on Friday, September 9th, 2011 at the school from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m., for the annual welcome back bbq.

Classroom meetings are scheduled as follows: Grades K-2 3:00 p.m.

Grades 3-5 3:15 p.m.

Grades 6-9 3:30 p.m.

Dismissal will be at 3:45 p.m., with buses leaving the school at approximately 3:55 p.m. The bbq will be held rain or shine.

 

Magazine Campaign: The annual magazine campaign will run from September 9th to September 26th. This is the major school fundraiser for the year. We remind you that any discount coupons you have will be honored if you attach the coupon directly to the subscription form. Visa and MasterCard will be accepted. Students in grade K to 2 will not be asked to participate in the magazine campaign, but if any parents wish to purchase magazines, please send a note to the teacher and the magazine booklet will be sent home.

Literacy Club: The Literacy Club will begin next week - Monday to Friday from 8:20 to 8:50 a.m. Students should not be dropped off prior to 8:20 a.m. for the Literacy Club, as no supervision is provided.

 

Boot Camp: Boot Camp will begin next week - Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m.

 

After School Activities: Students staying for after school activities must have parental permission - parents are asked to write a note in the student agenda or write a separate note, giving permission for their child to stay for after school activities.

Vernon River Home & School Meeting: The first meeting of the 2011-2012 school year will be held on Wednesday, September 21st at 7:00 p.m.

Vernon River Home and School Lunch Program: The order form for September’s school lunch program is being sent home today.

 

Empty Ink Cartridges: The school is again accepting empty ink cartridges, to be returned to Staples. This program provides money to schools across PEI. Please return your empty cartridges to the main office.

 

Millview-Vernon River 4-H: Registration night for new and returning members AND parents will be held on Wednesday, September 21st at 7:00 p.m. at Vernon River School.

 

Speed Skating Registration: Speed Skate PEI is holding registration for the upcoming season on Saturday, September 10th from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Charlottetown Civic Centre. Speed Skating (Competitive, Developmental and Recreational) and Learn to Skate Programs run from October to March. Down East Dance Academy: Hip Hop for Boys & Jazz/Hip Hop Combo Classes -

Children’s Wish Foundation Wishmaker Walk for Wishes: Join them, Saturday, October 15, 2011 at any of the five locations across Prince Edward Island - Charlottetown, Summerside, Tignish, North Rustico & Montague. A short walk designed for families, schools and people of all ages to participate in, Walk for Wishes is a national event that takes place in over 100 communities throughout Canada. Proceeds will help grant wishes to Island children between the ages of 3 and 17 diagnosed with a life threatening illness. 2011-2012 Scout Year Recruitment: The Scouting organization is over 100 years old in Canada - GIRLS AND BOYS aged 5 to 26 years old. Registration & Information Night will be held at Montague Consolidated School on Thursday, September 15th from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Beavers: Age 5-7 Cubs: Age 8-10 Scouts: Age 11-14

Venturers: Age 14-17 Rovers: Age 17-26

Atlantic Fitness East: Red Cross Fall Swimming Lessons are starting on Saturday, September 10th, 11th, and 14th at Atlantic Fitness East. Please call 838-3047 to register your child. For strong swimmers, take the first step towards becoming a lifeguard. Bronze Star will be offered on Sept 10th and Bronze Medallion will be starting on Sept 14th.

Tumbling Tots, a fitness program for 3 – 5 year old children is starting on Tuesday, September 13th at 4pm.

Children’s Bootcamp is starting on Wednesday, September 14th at 5pm. This program includes a wide variety of activities for kids 6 – 11 years including Bootcamp, ball fun and more! Come out and get active!

Saturday, September 17 is AFE Family Fun Day. Events include a family run, Eurobobble, kids scavenger hunt, games, face painting, family swim, BBQ and much, much more!! Don’t miss out on the fun!
