The Eastern School District believes that at any time in the school year a crisis may occur, i.e. the sudden death of a student or staff member, which can have a significant impact on the student body and staff. It is essential that the school environment be open and supportive in dealing with this loss and that we recognize grieving is part of this process. Teachers and administrators are prepared to help students in the time of crisis. This involves planning and preparation for such a crisis. Procedures are in place so that the process is structured and orderly. The plan includes a Crisis Response Team at the school level to co-ordinate the school/district response. Membership on the team is school based, including:
- Principal, Mr. Wood;
- school counselor, Lisa Cheverie;
- one teacher representing the school staff;
- school secretary, Mrs. McIsaac;
- and such others as the Principal may deem appropriate.
The following resource persons are available on a consultative basis if the nature of the crisis warrants their help:
- one person representing Mental Health;
- one or more persons representing the religious faiths of the community;
- one public health nurse;
- Student Services Consultant, or Unit or Board-based
counselors.
