Students more readily understand what writing is about when they write for functional purposes. Just as we write lists, invitations, recipes, letters, notes, and reports, students like to write for real reasons. Here are some ways to promote writing for real reasons:

~ Write a daily note to your child and tuck into a lunch box or school bag.
~ Ask a question so your child has a reason to write back.
~ Encourage your child to write a letter, postcard, or note to a relative or friend.
~ Have your child write or add to lists of groceries or things to do.

Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually on January 27th to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. More than 1.5 millian Canadians have already participated in the intitiative since its debut. Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crusical to a child's development. Even just 15 minutes a day can improve a child's literacy skills dramatically and can help a parent improve their skills as well.
